Humpback Whales Sighting
It is enough to arrive the month of July and it is possible to note the presence of humpback whales in Morro de São Paulo and Boipeba. The marine mammals, which come from Antarctica to the Brazilian coast reproduce and mate, are often part of the Bahia coast scenery in winter and spring. This is because the waters are hot and more favorable to the reproduction and breastfeeding of their offspring.
On average, the cubs measure four meters and weigh 1.5 tons. The adults, however, reach 16 meters in length and up to 40 tons - which equals the weight of eight elephants together. The size and beauty of the animals explains the interest of tourists, who can see acrobatics and jumps in which whales even expose up to two-thirds of the body. In Morro de São Paulo is possible to hire tour operators accredited to carry out the sighting. You must follow some rules of respect for animals, such as: do not let the boat approach less than 100 meters from whales; disconnect the propellers from the boat during the observation period; do not stay more than 30 minutes near the whales and observe the speed limit.
All boats should also always have a biologist on board who, in addition to collecting information for research, helps guide tourists and crew.
It is important to remember that there is no guarantee of finding whales in all walks, since they are in their natural habitat.
